Bethesda Pentecostal Church, Bury. This building had on its roof one of the jewels of British slating, Westmoreland Greys, which we were able to save. The original specification had been to strip and re-slate using the old slates. However, there are always inherent problems doing this which require skilled and conscientious slaters to overcome. It is also very expensive! We can confidently state that the Stormflex system is considerably stronger than re-slating with old slates.
In the course of the work we came across an unusual problem; over the decades some of the “torching” (lime plastering on the underside of the slates) had fallen off the slates onto the tongue and groove pitch pine boarding on the ceilings and slid down onto the wall plates. This had created a problem whereby the lime, because of its hydroscopic properties, had absorbed differing degrees of moisture, some of which had caused rot. So the decision was made to strip all of the eaves slates, removing the debris and doing any necessary repairs.
Our client was the Reverend Bruce Millar, a man who has been remarkaby efficient in utilising modern technology to serve his ends. When we first met him he was talking on the internet to the United States! Himself and a very able & energetic committee were well into the process of turning the Church into a community centre that was constantly humming with activities. The money they had saved using the Stormflex system could therefore be directed towards their main aim- providing facilities and services for the local community.
He is very open to anyone who wants to enquire about our work there. 0161 761 6942. Email bg.millar@virgin.net
